When you are happy with the colors in your current selection, save those colors as a reusable custom palette. You can do this by generating color swatch chips with no selection, or after refining colors in your artwork, select the rectangles or objects that contain the colors you like. About Proxima Nova

In the world of typography, few fonts have had the cultural reach and quiet dominance of Proxima Nova. Designed by Mark Simonson and released in 2005, this geometric sans serif has earned a reputation for being both beautifully neutral and quietly stylish. So much so that it’s been called the typeface that replaced Helvetica as the world’s most popular font.

But how did it get here? Let’s dive into the story behind Proxima Nova — from its early sketches to web font stardom.

Get Proxima Serif

From Zanzibar to Proxima Nova: The Origin Story

The journey of Proxima Nova started back in 1981, when Mark Simonson first sketched a typeface he dubbed Zanzibar, a name chosen simply because he liked the way it sounded. This early version already showed hints of what Proxima Nova would become, with familiar lowercase forms and evolving uppercase designs.

Fast forward to 1991. While working as art director at Business Ethics magazine, Simonson frequently used Gill Sans, but longed for a cleaner, more neutral geometric sans serif with similar charm. Unable to find exactly what he wanted, he revisited his old sketches of Zanzibar and began work on a new typeface.

A Hybrid of Classic Inspirations

The second iteration of the font was called Visigothic, modeled after American Gothic styles. It drew inspiration from a range of classics — Helvetica, Akzidenz Grotesk, Futura, Kabel, and even U.S. highway signage. This mash-up of influences created a unique blend of modern proportions and geometric structure.

In 1994, Simonson released the typeface commercially under the name Proxima Sans with just six styles. But with a full-time job, a new child, and lackluster sales, the project went on hold.

The Nova Moment

That changed in the early 2000s. Designers began reaching out, requesting an expanded family. The key turning point was also when Rolling Stone magazine selected Proxima Sans during a redesign. Proxima Sans ​was featured extensively for headlines, captions, subheads and small texts. The renewed interest inspired Simonson to overhaul the design completely.

This wasn’t just a refresh. Simonson redrew nearly all the characters, reworked the font weights, rebuilt the hinting for sharper on-screen performance, and increased the character set from 245 to over 1,400 characters. He added OpenType features like small caps, multiple figure styles, fractions, case-sensitive forms, and alternate characters. Kerning and spacing were meticulously refined.

The redesign was so extensive that mark quickly realized the new design was ot goin ot be backwards -compatible with Proxima Sans, so he came up with a new name for the redesigned typface - Proxima Nova - because in his own words, the new typeface took “a cue from Century Nova, the final addition to ATF’s Century family in 1964, and one of the last foundry typefaces to be released.” In 2005, Proxima Nova was released.

Why Designers Love Proxima Nova

Proxima Nova has grown into a 48-font superfamily, available in eight weights (from Thin to Black) and three widths (Normal, Condensed, Extra Condensed). It supports a wide range of languages, including Greek and Vietnamese, and is widely available through platforms like Adobe Fonts and our very own – Typogram Studio.

It’s not just technically robust — it’s visually satisfying. It offers the modernist clarity of Helvetica, but with a softer, more humanist touch. A great example? The lowercase “i”. In Helvetica, it’s dotted with a square. In Proxima Nova? A circle. It’s a tiny detail like this that really showcase Proxima Nova’s warmth.

The Typeface of the Web

Today, Proxima Nova is one of the most-used commercial typefaces on the web, appearing on thousands of websites and in countless brand identities. Its popularity is owed to its neutral versatility, excellent readability, and a tone that feels professional without being cold.

It has grown far beyond Mark’s original release, with a vastly expanded character set that now includes Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic, Hebrew, Thai, Hangeul, Tamil, and Devanagari. What began as a family of 42 fonts (seven weights, three widths, each with italics) has evolved into 80, boasting eight weights, five widths, and matching italics.

It’s no wonder Proxima Nova has become the go-to choice for designers looking for a modern sans serif that feels just right.

What Are Ink Traps in Type Design?

Ink traps are little notches or cutaways you’ll sometimes see at the corners or joins of letters in a font. They were originally a clever fix for a very analog problem: when type was printed on cheap paper (like newspaper), the ink would spread and blur together—especially in tight spaces. These notches gave the ink a place to "trap" itself, helping the letters stay sharp and legible.

Nowadays, we no longer have a desperate need for ink traps for type to be legible, thanks to better technology like high-resolution screens and improved printing methods—but ink traps have stayed as a cool design detail. Hope your week’s going well! The past couple of weeks have been intense — we’ve been working around the clock to get our new design tool ready for launch.

So today, I wanted to share a quick update and give you a proper sneak peek of Typogram Studio — a tool we built from the ground up to help you create beautiful typography with ease. We’ve been deep in it for months now, obsessing over every detail. And now, it's finally at a point where I’m excited (and honestly a little nervous) to show you what we’ve been working on.

Below are a few of my favorite parts of Typogram Studio — thoughtful, detail-driven features I think you’ll really enjoy.

Designing Inside Typogram Studio: Getting Started

Getting started designing inside Typogram Studio is pretty straightforward. Just create a blank artboard, add your text, and you’re ready to begin.

If you need inspiration, try our brand new generate artboard feature. It allows you to instantly browse design ideas based on techniques like ligatures, icon swaps, color and more and filter ideas using tags like “stylish”, “fun”, and more. It’s a great way to stumble upon something new and unexpected.

Polishing Your Typography: Ligatures, Style Alternates & Variable Font Gradient

I’ve always believed it’s the small details that make a design feel complete, especially in typography. That idea shaped so much of what we built into Typogram Studio.

You can swap in alternate letterforms or ligatures with a click. If a font has style alternates, they’ll show up in the side panel, ready for you to explore and substitute into your design. The Letter Select tool lets you mix letters from different fonts — one of my favorite ways to add personality to a design.

For variable font lovers, the Variable Font Gradient tool lets you play with weight, slant, and width using an interactive graph. You can drag to create smooth transitions or use presets to get started quickly. If you want even more custom control, you can tweak individual letters using Letter Select for a completely custom look.

Discovering Fonts in Typogram Studio

Finding the right font should feel like play, not a chore. When designing the font menu in Typogram Studio, I wanted the experience to be fun and intuitive. You can filter fonts by traits like variable, ligature, serif, sans serif, display, or import a font you already love. Another way to explore is through our Artboard Generation feature, where you can filter designs by traits like “ligature”, design ideas like “colorful”, or by tone through tags like “stylish.”

We’re also lucky to continually work with The Type Founders, who help us bring a curated library of premium retail fonts (like Proxima Nova, Mastro, and more) into Typogram Studio — the same high-quality typefaces from top foundries (like Hamiliton Wood Type, P22 Type Foundry and more) you’ll find on Monotype and Adobe Fonts. Exporting or Copying to Other Tools

When we were building export options in Typogram Studio, I wanted to make sure it felt effortless, whether you're wrapping up a logo or sharing a quick concept. Just click export, choose SVG or PNG, select size, and toggle on a transparent background if you need it. We also added preset sizes for places like Instagram and Pinterest, so you can export straight from Typogram Studio. And if you’re someone who likes to fine-tune in other tools (like I do), you can copy your design directly into Figma, Canva, Adobe, or Affinity. It’s designed to slide right into workflows you already have.

Almendra is a captivating script font blending historical elegance with modern functionality. Inspired by the charms of Chancery and Gothic hands, Almendra embodies the fluidity and grace of these two influential calligraphic styles. Its elegant serif structure strikes a nice balance between tradition and creativity, while its crisp stroke contrast exudes old-world sophistication while remaining fresh and versatile for contemporary designs.

Almendra is designed with generous spacing and a tall x-height, enhancing readability. Its smooth curves and elegant, gothic-informed strokes exude warmth and familiarity, making it an ideal choice for topics like fairytales, magic, and histories(especailly Medieval and Renaissance periods). Additionally, Almendra features a small cap and a display variation (my favorite), making this font family much more versatile for more complex projects.

Almendra Italics

Almendra Italics brings a dynamic flavor to the typeface. The Italics, available in regular and bold, maintain the same character as the regular style but with a sharper flair and a very small right slant. They are perfect for adding an expressive touch to graphics and brand elements.

How to use Almendra for Logo

Almendra evokes a vintage or Gothic storybook feel. The bold weight offers more legibility at smaller scales.

How to use Almendra for Branding & Marketing

Almendra’s timeless style makes it a valuable asset for branding, particularly within publishing, children’s products, and artisanal brands with a historic vibe. Its classic look and readability give it an edge for marketing materials seeking to establish nostalgia and old-timey vibes. We could also combine Almendra with other less ornate typefaces to balance visual harmony to reduce the old-timey vibes of Almendra.

• Karla: With its straightforward personality, Karla provides a great contrast to Almendra, excellent for branding that requires a mix of sophistication and approachability.

I’ve been working so much on Typogram Studio (a brand new, typography-first vector design tool we are launching in 2-ish weeks!) that I have neglected sending the newsletter. Writing is a habit I have built up for a long time - falling off it has made me feel so guilty. Visual hierarchy tells the viewer where to start and what to notice next. It’s key for creating intuitive, communicative designs.

Design tip: When in doubt, add more contrast. It improves readability, guides attention, and strengthens your layout.
